If you had asked about the likelihood of someone like me moving from a poor neighborhood in one of the suburbs of Kampala, Uganda to the United States, becoming a doctor, and then building a substantial real estate portfolio, people would have laughed at the idea.

Yet, in 1991, I began that exact journey and have never looked back.

Discovering a Passion for Real Estate

When I first started real estate, I began with single-family homes. Living in California, I invested in Texas due to lower costs and better cash flow potential. Remotely juggling this new undertaking, alongside my demanding roles as an anesthesiologist and military officer, was difficult. However, the promise of sustainable wealth creation excited me.

I understood that in order to increase my profit, I had to scale my investments. Not wanting to continue to ride the one-and-done, single-family merry-go-round, I began to consume books, listen to podcasts, and attend seminars to find a less time-consuming income source. This ongoing education eventually introduced me to multifamily investments.

Transitioning to Multifamily Investing

Switching from single-family homes to multifamily properties was a game-changer. It offered better scalability and higher revenue potential, aligning perfectly with my long-term financial goals and my limited time. This move allowed me to increase my income and create stability for my family and future generations.

Leveraging Skills from Medicine and Military

The skills I developed in medicine and the military have been instrumental throughout my real estate journey. As an anesthesiologist, attention to detail and meticulous planning are essential qualities that seamlessly transfer to property management and investment strategies. Similarly, the leadership skills and resilience I gained during my service in the Army Reserves have helped me navigate complex real estate deals and effectively manage properties.

What I Have Learned in the Process

Balancing multiple roles, managing properties remotely, and keeping up with my medical practice and military duties required building a reliable local team and leveraging technology for remote property management. Here are some of the valuable lessons I’ve learned along the way:

  • Start Small and Learn: When starting real estate investing, single-family homes can give you a chance to get your feet wet and understand the fundamentals of real estate investments.
  • Never Stop Learning: One of the most important things you can do is always be learning. Read books, listen to podcasts from successful investors, and attend seminars to stay on top of the latest market trends and strategies. The more you know, the better equipped you'll be to make intelligent investment decisions.
  • Use Your Unique Skills: Think about the skills you've developed professionally. Chances are, many of those skills can be applied to real estate investing. What valuable qualities, like attention to detail, leadership, and problem-solving, have you gained from your current career or job?
  • Build a Rockstar Team: As you grow your portfolio, having a strong local team in your corner is crucial. These people will help you manage your properties and keep things running smoothly. Look for reliable, experienced professionals who share your vision and work ethic.
  • Embrace Technology: Technology is your friend when managing properties locally or remotely. So many great tools can help you stay on top of things even when you can't be there in person. From virtual property tours to online rent collection, these online solutions can make investing much more manageable.

Impact and Legacy

Beyond wealth creation, I’m committed to positively impacting education and healthcare initiatives in the areas where I invest. This vision extends beyond my local and investment communities; it's about building a legacy of service and wealth that will benefit my family and friends in Uganda as well.

My journey from poverty in Uganda to success in the United States is a testament to the power of resilience, hard work, and saying “yes” to opportunity. It proves that, with the right mindset, any challenge can be an opening for growth and success. I hope my story inspires others to pursue their dreams and create a lasting impact in their communities.
