Danica Patrick; Finding A Great Team And Forming Great Relationships

I am extra fired up for this show. I’m with Danica Patrick. She truly is an inspirational role model that has transitioned from iconic sports superstar from the racing world into an entrepreneurial powerhouse. She retired. She is investing her time into her entrepreneurial endeavors, which we talk a little bit about in this interview.

You should know of some of the historic accomplishments that she pulled off in the racing world. She is the only woman to have led laps at both the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500, a feat that only thirteen other drivers have accomplished. She's also the only woman to have won an Indy car race, the only woman to have won the Pole in NASCAR's Daytona 500, and the first woman ever to host the ESPY Awards.

I always think Danica is bigger than sports. She's been on Time Magazine's list of most influential people. She has been in more Superbowl commercials than any other celebrity. That number is thirteen. All with her sponsor, GoDaddy. She was featured on the Entrepreneur magazine.

Danica is focusing on her entrepreneurial empire. She's got her own line of athleisure wear. She's got a vineyard and is selling wine. She put out a book called Pretty Intense. She continues to be the spokesperson for GoDaddy, her long-time sponsor.

In this particular show, we talk about what it takes to assemble a great team. In the racing world, you need a great team. As entrepreneurs, as folks that want to make things happen in our life, how do we take it to that next level?

The other thing we talked about in this interview is what is Danica's secret for managing time. She's got all these different things going on. She's in the spotlight. She's got businesses to run. She's out promoting her books. I asked her, “What is it that you do to create more time in your life?” It's a challenge that we all face. There are so many big things that we pack into this interview.

Dustin
Danica, how has the preparation you did or do in racing, how does that translate to business?
Danica
The one fundamental thing of life is surrounding yourself with good people. It's about having a good team around you. I have great people that have been working with me for a long time. I have GoDaddy that helps me on the business side of things and people that can help see my vision come to life.
Dustin
What's your big tip for finding great talent because that's tricky?
Danica
You have to tap into your intuitive and go with your gut on people that seem they feel right. You want someone with confidence. I get that there are well-qualified people that aren't always the most confident, but that is definitely a first step in taking a leap with someone and hiring someone is the way they carry themselves. After that, I always say that I love surrounding myself with self-starters that don't need their handheld. They take their own initiative to start something, grow something, go somewhere, build it up in ways that I would never even think without having to ask every single time unless something costs money. They did ask for a little while. I'll tell them, "No, this is a great idea. Keep going." Confidence is very important.
Dustin
Vineyard, you've got the book out, you were doing this stuff too while you were racing on the side. How did you manage your time effectively?
Danica
I had the saying for awhile where I said, "The more I do, the more I do." You go into a restaurant and there's nobody in it and somehow your meal takes forever. Maybe they start from scratch. They're lazy. They're slow. They're getting the chicken out of the fridge or whatever it is they're making. You go to a restaurant where it's busy and stuff is going and going. That's how I feel with work. When I have a lot going on, I tend to get very organized and stay on this ambitious routine and pattern. I make lists and lists are one of those things that are incredibly powerful to accomplish things. Not because it reminds you, but I believe that there is a manifesting quality to writing the list down that you intend to finish it, so you do. It goes a little deeper but I read a lot of lists when I get busy too, so I got to cross it off.
Dustin
GoDaddy, they've been at your side when you were racing. They're at your side now and the next creation of your world. It speaks to me that you know a thing about creating long-term business relationships. What's your advice for the entrepreneur that wants to start looking for those relationships? Also how do you maintain them throughout the years?
Danica
Authenticity plays a huge role in that. When the relationship is very authentic, and you do partner well, they tend to keep going. Instead of tapping out of whatever it was that you had for each other for a minute, you are able to keep growing together because you have the same values, same goals and same work ethic. Take for instance with GoDaddy, we've been partners for years. When it came around for them to sponsor me for the last two races in my career with the Daytona 500 and the Indy 500. We did a commercial and the commercial is all my brands. They promoted my brands for me and I didn't even ask for that. I'm super grateful, but that's because what I was doing fit what they were doing so well. We didn't even have to negotiate that, that was how well we fit together. Finding people like that to have surrounding you that are of the same mindset and have the same goal and want to accomplish the same things and even complement each other.
Sometimes it's not even about the perfect pairing in the exact same way, like your carbon copies, but it's that you fit each other well. They want to help people recognize that building small businesses and using them will help you do that. I am someone who has small businesses and I need their help in doing that. We fit well together. Finding those people to be around you, whether they're employees or partners, is all part of that magic because you can't do it yourself. You can probably do a small business by yourself, but if you're going to grow a big business, you're going to need marketing. You're going to need production. You're going to need branding. The social platform is so big now. You're going to need so many different visionaries and financial support. It's going to take a team to build a big business.
Dustin
What's your guilty splurge? Life is good. Business is good. What are you spending? What are you splurging on?
Danica
I spend money on experiences.
Dustin
What are your favorite experiences
Danica
Vacations, trips, I spare no expense at those. The best rooms or the best trips or the best locations or the most amount of activities and you name it. It’s that to me because that's not stuff. I get that stuff lasts, but stuff comes and goes. You wear it twice or you wear it for two seasons, you're like, "I'm over that jacket." Experiences are things that last a lifetime and you grow from them. You share them with people. I love that. I love experiences.
Dustin
Any hidden gem, places that you care to share?
Danica
I'm a big fan of traveling to new places. I've been to many places. I've been there a couple times. Tulum, Mexico is this special little hippie joint. Unfortunately, with people like me saying that it makes others go there and then it becomes less quaint and boutique. It's getting busier. I love anywhere that has a spiritual, soulful vibe to it. I'm on the search for the next one. I'd love to get to Machu Picchu or somewhere like that.
Dustin
What's your most worthwhile investment?
Danica
For me physically, facials. I'd say eating healthy and working out super important. Those are somewhat investments but in your health. As far as like actual financial investments, good employees, good people. They change your life. They do. When you find the good ones, you never let them go and they never let you go.
Dustin
Danica, what do you want your legacy to be?
Danica
I said this when I was finishing up my career. I was so grateful for the opportunities that it's given to me because it's given me everything that I have from a notoriety standpoint, from a platform standpoint, accomplishments being unique and different. I said, "Wouldn't it be amazing if I was known for something else even more than racing someday?" It will never diminish what I did in racing, but it will only mean that I was able to move on and also accomplished something great, whether that's something in the health and wellness and fitness and inspirational category. With the book and the workout program, the food, my clothing line, my wine, public speaking, maybe it's even in the framework of changing the curriculum. Teach kids about food and planting gardens and taking care of themselves. I dream a lot about those things, but I would hope that people remember me for being an interesting, smart, captivating, kind and compassionate, strong woman.
Dustin
